Probably should have this in the trunk

  1. Interesting idea. It's a little harder to start a fire with them. What are the odds that the batteries will still work or be there, when you need them?

  2. Yes, you should very useful things, and all you have to do, is check the batteries once a year or so, less, if you put in lithium ones. Just have to ask, what is my life worth?

  3. I bought these a couple of years ago. Good reminder, I should go check them.

  4. They're also available in infrared and the military uses them to mark helicopter landing areas.

  5. As for the batteries, store them in a ziplock with the strobes. The only failures I've ever had with similar beacons is from battery corrosion.

    1. ^That, right there. I keep a set of these in the car, and just swap out batteries every year. Of the ones I've pulled, they're still fine, but I rotate them into normal use so I don't get left short someplace miles from anywhere.

And no, these won't start a campfire.
That's a feature, not a bug: they also won't start a leaking gas tank and your car on fire after a collision either, and they burn one helluva lot longer and brighter than any traditional flare.
