  2. The Wright J-5 Radial: Why was it used?
    It was the first radial engine to operate over 50 hours without internal failure; however, the valve rocker arms needed to be greased every 25 hours.

    Lindeberg had a watch maker design (the 18 clock greasers needed - 2 per cylinder) for the New York / Paris to grease the rockers at 25 hours while the engine was operating. They were not battery operated, you would wind each one up prior to take-off. Wonder where they are now?
