And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

The Sea - Sauk 1869
I'm suspicious something was lost in the translation of this guy's name.
I grew up in south central Wisconsin, amongst the lands of the Sac and Hochunk. Part of the area this fella could have lived in was between the Wisconsin River and the Fox river. The Wisconsin flows south/west and the Fox north/east. In their meanderings, they come within 1.5 miles of each other at the town of Portage, Wi. So the Wisconsin river is the natural conduit to travel from northern Wisconsin to the south west corner near Prairie du Chien. And the natural conduit to travel north east is the Fox River. My romantic side would like to think that this fella went from his home on the Wisconsin River near Prairie du SAC, Wisconsin north; portaged over the connector land to the Fox, and continued further north/east to Green Bay, Wisconsin. Once he saw how big the Green Bay really is; I wouldn't say that his name is anything but a name of awe!
He looks like a Central Casting Indian for a Lone Ranger show.
ReplyDeleteAnd the image is from 1869. I wonder what sort of life Mr. Sea lived in those years.
