The return of the prodigal

The daughter has returned from abroad, and has begun sharing her photos.

Check out this Viking horn donated to York Minster by Ulf, the Viking, in 1030.  I can't believe it's the real thing, but it is.

Interacting with the Highlanders.

Cool church roof.  I should do the roof this way at my place.

Lots of ruins

Albion, oh Albion...

  1. 987 years old... wow. Also, neat shot of the cathedral ceiling (and yes, you should). It seems the prodigal has your eye for a good shot... Thank you for letting me into a bit of your world via the blog. From me and mine to you and yours, Merry Christmas. May you never have to leave the ammo in your magazines in long enough for the springs to weaken.

  2. Once you get old enough to be 'responsible', a lot of those opportunities fade. It's good that she's had this marvelous experience.

  3. Most kids her age would have their noses buried in a smart phone. Good job Mr. & Mrs. CW.

    1. I dunno. Looks like she, at one point at least, was burying her nose in a Scotsman's cheek. She's a fireball, that kid.

  5. I don't believe this could possibly be the "best version" of, "RULE BRITANNIA"!

    What was the occasion for this performance?

    Did anyone else notice that the map at the beginning of the video shows the "United Kingdom" being located at Glasgow, Scotland?

    The performance was in London, England, in Royal Albert Hall, with the responding audience also in London, England, gathered at Hyde Park.

    Instead of having a female opera singer impersonating a male in military uniform, why didn't they get a male baritone singer?

    I could not understand what she was singing, so I had to look up the lyrics.

    Happily, I did see a FEW Saint George flags in the crowd, but not many, as the Saint George flag, the banner of England, is now roundly condemned as "racist", offensive, nationalistic, and unpopular.

    I saw a couple of Welsh flags, but no Scottish flags.

    I even saw a French tricolor!

    1. When Britain first, at Heaven's command
      Arose from out the azure main;
      This was the charter of the land,
      And guardian angels sang this strain:
      "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
      "Britons never will be slaves."

      The nations, not so blest as thee,
      Must, in their turns, to tyrants fall;
      While thou shalt flourish great and free,
      The dread and envy of them all.
      "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
      "Britons never will be slaves."

      Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
      More dreadful, from each foreign stroke;
      As the loud blast that tears the skies,
      Serves but to root thy native oak.
      "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
      "Britons never will be slaves."

      Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame:
      All their attempts to bend thee down,
      Will but arouse thy generous flame;
      But work their woe, and thy renown.
      "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
      "Britons never will be slaves."

      To thee belongs the rural reign;
      Thy cities shall with commerce shine:
      All thine shall be the subject main,
      And every shore it circles thine.
      "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
      "Britons never will be slaves."

      The Muses, still with freedom found,
      Shall to thy happy coast repair;
      Blest Isle! With matchless beauty crown'd,
      And manly hearts to guard the fair.
      "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
      "Britons never will be slaves."
