Hunters in interior Alaska bag some big moose.

They call it the 60 inch club.

This years members tell their stories here.

And of course, there's that one guy that harvests a true monster.  Behold the 80 inch moose that Israel Payton brought down.

Payton estimates the moose yielded somewhere between 700 and 800 pounds of meat. The antlers and skull alone weighed 105 pounds.

He's gonna need a bigger freezer.

  1. You'd need a caterpillar (with a crane hoist) to go in and get it once you shot it.

  2. You bone it out and carry it out 100 lbs at at time. Been there, done that.

  3. It reminds me of an elk hunt in Utah, in the Nebo Creek area. I'd been hiking all day - and was three major ridges back (north) from the nearest road. We didn't have horses, and I don't like elk hunting without a horse. Finally, almost at the end of the day, but there was still enough light to shoot, I saw a really nice bull elk. Then I thought about quartering and hauling and let the old boy live. I had enjoyed the hunt, slung my rifle and started the long walk back to the truck. A few days later, I shot a spike bull on the top of the mountain near Pleasant Creek and it was much easier to get the elk out.

  4. That's a tank.

First bull I ever shot was smaller but I tipped it over in a bad spot. Two day to get it out. You learn certain things the hard way.
