Port Gaverne, Cornwall, England

  1. It appears as if at one point in time a robust river ran down through there...or is it tidal?

  2. Blimey! This place has a 4+m tidal range. No wonder we don't see any piers or boats at the head of the inlet...

  3. Google Earth Street view shows the waterline between the house in the center of the picture right side of the bay and the rest of the town, so I'm thinking low tide in CW's picture.

  4. Definitely low tide. A perfect place for a smugglers Cove, and it was.
Tacking into that inlet would have required nerves of steel. So mostly they rowed the Brandy, Tea, and Tobacco into shore in dory's. All duty free and no interference from pesky government agents. In on the high tide, unload and out on the falling tide.
