I dare you to read this...

... and not agree that it is the best, the pinnacle, the crescendo of all American literature to date.

All the way to that Catskill eagle, soaring low, yet high.

  1. I think that Herman Melville was a literary genius. I've always held that opinion of him, much as he admired Hawthorne.

    1. That chapter has to be read slowly, chewed over thoroughly, to appreciate it properly. What an author!

    If you like to parse elaborate sentences, may I suggest Faulkner?

    And for some clear, concise descriptive prose try Manchester's opening section of his Churchill biography, wherein he describes the world condition at the turn of the century.
