Something I didn't know.

If you hit the end, the cap ensures that the rail peels off the posts like a ribbon.

If it didn't, it would skewer your car just like this.  Not good.  Bad.

Now we know!


  1. After the original design was tested and approved for widespread installation, the company that built these undertook a 'cost reduction' redesign that resulted in the skewering of multiple vehicles. I believe the lawsuits continue to this day.

  2. It's also designed to dissipate momentum by straightening the corrugations on the gard rail.
