Cabin Porn

I can tell you exactly what a cabin like that smells like.  Back in the day, while packing in the Marble Mountain Wilderness, me and two other guys came across something like this that the Forest Service was silently allowing to rot into the ground.  Since it was spitting snow at the time, and getting dark and much colder, the three of us were both surprised and very happy to stumble onto such a structure that we hadn't suspected was there.

We were inside in a flash, and discovered to our further glee that a functional if a bit broken down cast iron stove was still there.

Not only did that stove warm the cabin up nicely, we could sleep under cover and stay out of the snow.    Who could care about all the mice that scurried about after we settled down?  Both mice and men were justly thankful for the shelter.

  1. There are a few cabins in the Trinity Alps Wilderness area, too.
I couldn't begin to tell if there's a stove in any of them.

    1. I'll tell you what. Even when you are up for sleeping out in the open, there is something very comforting about having a roof over your head and a fire in the stove, even if it's just a musty old falling down cabin.
