The stinking Democrats are currently trying to smear Romney with the story of some stupid and mean prank he pulled in 1965. That's right, NINETEEN SIXTY FIVE.
Let's go forward in time and look at the man and his morals after he had had a chance to mature a bit, since that is the man we are going to elect President in November (knock on wood).
Via Snopes, we learn that in 1996, the 14 year old daughter of one of his business partners went missing while partying in New York City. Romney immediately closed down Bain Capital and asked all 30 partners and employees to fly to New York and assist in the search. Romney set up a command center at the LaGuardia Marriot, established a toll free hot line for tips, and coordinated with the NYPD.
Romney went through his Rolodex and asked everyone Bain did business with in New York to help. Price Waterhouse employees put up missing child posters on poles, while cashiers at a pharmacy Bain owned put flyers into every bag of merchandise they sold. Bain employees spoke with everyone they could find - prostitutes, druggies, anyone.
The effort made the evening news, and ultimately the hot line got a call from someone who asked if there was a reward, but hung up right away. The police traced the call and found the girl in the throes of a withdrawal from a massive dose of the drug ecstasy, which doctors later said could have killed her within 24 hours without medical help.
Without Mr Romney's compassion for the plight of his partner, and his leadership in the search to find the missing girl, there very well could have been a tragic result to the story.
So which is the better measure of the man? The mean and stupid act of a teenager in 1965, or the selfless help he provided to a distraught co worker whose daughter had gone missing?
You decide in November.
