The desire to arm all three flying branches with a common aircraft was another deciding factor in the selection of the F4 Phantom....from pure interceptor/dog fighter roll, there really was no the end, it took multiple aircraft in Viet Nam to fill all the demands anyway, with the Sky Raider indicating the need for a plane like the A-10 Warthog....Tough, slow, maneuverable, with tremendous armament and loitering capability for tank destruction and support for ground troops....
