    1. Almost certainly a refinished Les Paul. Since the maple top sides are not book-matched, it was originally in a non-transparent finish rather than a burst-type transparent finish. If the black purfling is original, I imagine that the original color was on the light side since that kind of contrast is typical. Same with the pickup surrounds, although that’s a replaceable part that doesn’t mean that much. Looks to be a nice satin finish. Of course, refinishing such a nice instrument removes any collectible value, if that’s what you like, then ok. I have a 1965 Fender Precision that was originally in Olympic White that I refinished in a natural wood color back in 1973. It looks a bit like the bass that John Deacon used in the 1970s and 80s. It does, however need new frets.
