And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

The port waist gunner station on the Memphis Belle
And the giant vertical stabilizer rising on the left of the photo. Look at the oil-canning of the skin; if you're a gunner there's nothing between you and Mother Earth but altitude and about .016 of aluminum.
You guys are right - it is the starboard side. I walked around it multiple times... yes the ramp up to the vertical stabilizer makes it obvious. I sent it with it marked "port" - my bad.
Late buddy of mine, a fellow Legion member, wish I'd asked him for some stories. He was a waist gunner on a B17. Like so often though, we avoided those old stories, and just told the ones about fishing.....
I believe that's the starboard side of the plane. The little wind screen is forward of the opening.
