And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
She had a face with character. Back then, you would call such a woman 'handsome' and it would be a compliment, with a specific meaning, that she is good looking in a certain way. She wouldn't have been called beautiful though.
The story of her relationship to John Wayne during and after the filming of Rooster Cogburn is an interesting one. While in real life they were political opposites, they formed a deep mutual admiration society while making the movie. Knowing that makes watching the movie that much more enjoyable today.
