And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Let's be fair: no one working on it nor producing it at the First National Stock Company in the summer of '42 had any wild frickin' idea at the time they were capturing lightning in a bottle, and making one of the Top Five Movies Ever Made. It was just another knock-it-out nine-week wonder.
And if we're picking, you keep Ilsa. My choice is Yvonne, who was far prettier than Ingrid Bergman, and was the last surviving cast member until her death in 2016 at age 92. She was 19 when the film was made. (Only a year older than Lauren Bacall, btw, just two years before she met Bogart.)
