And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Once on the ground, an avionics tech will be unracking multiple boxes. Even if they think they got all of them first go-around, a strike like this will introduce 'soft failures' where gear fails sooner than later. Must have been a heckuva lightshow on the inside!
Modern aircraft are well protected, there's even a new section in the manual called L/HIRF (Lightning/High Intensity Radiated Field). I've seen a few aircraft come home with the pilots unaware that a lightning strike had occurred. During the daily inspection after the day's flying we saw burnt diverter strips and static wicks. A good friend who flew bombing missions over Hanoi said that the super intense storms were comparable to the flak they took on the bombing runs. Except for the part where they lost comrades.

With good static wicks, the crew probably didn't notice.
ReplyDeleteEr, I mean the instruments not show a strike. The lights how would have been intense.
