    1. There is no point to a speedometer in a VW bus.

    2. depends on the engine. stock engine sucked. but if it sucked a valve and you replaced it with a 2 L 914 engine with a weber on top . then it got out of it own way rather fast. the only good thing about it was the wife wanted the damn camper van in the divorce. I was glad to see it and her gone.

  2. My buddy had one when we were teens in the 70’s. We’d pile 8 of us in the back and with the rear engine and our light buddy driving he could pull a 2’ wheelie on a couple of dips and bumps in the road. Best stunt… we took out the bench seat behind the front ones and hooked surgical tubing with a cone as a door gun slingshot. We used water balloons and did drive byes. No harm done but stupid fun.

  3. Rented one for an Austrian ski trip in the 80s. The roads were slushy. We parked on a slope at our hotel so I set the safety brake. It got cold.

In the morning I drove away after releasing the safety brake not knowing, as the locals did, that those damn brakes were notorious for freezing shut after a slushy drive plus cold.

I stopped when the smoke and flames alerted me that maybe, possibly, there was a problem.

Lost 2 days of skiing and $500, which was a lot in the 80s.

  4. It's a later model, well later than the '59 I had, it has a gas gauge!
