And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
When I was 10 years old back in 1971 my grandfather took me to the bank that he was on the board of directors. He took $120 and got two rolls of $1 coins and 4 rolls of dime coins. He showed me how to go through the coins to find the silver coins. After we had removed the dozen silver coins he traded them in on 50 cents pies and quarters. We ended up with almost $20 in face value of silver coins.
I had a new hobby. He told me to never spent the silver coins and to document my finds then send him a letter with the results. He agreed to fund me up to $20 a month on my new hobby. I found over $20 in silver coins every month for 15 months when the finds were starting to drop off where they disappeared in late 1975. I have over two gallons of junk silver coins with most of them dimes. I am missing 3 castings of the Mercury dimes. They also happen to be the rarest. I have been through the junk coins at two different times to find and remove any coins that had a collector's value.
In the late '70,s my best friend's dad let us go thru the money from his laundromats for a couple of years. I came out with a few handfuls of silver but my friend who culled it every week got rolls and rolls he probably still has. I did find a couple of silver quarters in the till last month so it's still out there but mainly from ignorant folks spending collected coins back into circulation.
Alas, my modest stash was largely with Anglo Far East Bullion but they went bust last year so now I'm down to a few scraps that I chose to hold. I should have asked to hold all of it myself. Cést la vie.
Coke machine at work took my dollar last week, wouldn't cough up the soda, but refunded me 4 quarters. One was a 1949 issue. Profit on the deal: $8.71.
Always get a second opinion. I got ripped off on a rare silver dollar that had a fold in the impression. Saw the same coin on Pawn Stars went for $15K as I remember.
Hefty premium on the walkers but absolutely beautiful…
