Bar-tailed Godwit has broken its own record in 2022: a first-year bird (five months old!) has flown 13,560 km—just shy of the direct flight limit of a Boeing 787—from Alaska to Tasmania, seemingly non-stop, in just 11 days

  1. If true, that's just shy of 32 mph average speed, amazing. No food or water? Do they drink seawater on the fly I wonder?

  2. From Wikipedia:
“The migration of the subspecies Limosa lapponica baueri across the Pacific Ocean from Alaska to New Zealand is the longest known non-stop flight of any bird, and also the longest journey >>> without pausing to feed <<< by any animal. The round-trip migration for this subspecies is over 29,000 km (18,020 mi).“

  5. Soaring on the wind and swooping over the waves provide energy for flight.

Many a time I've watched Albatross or Terns or Frigates not beat a wing for hours. Then, a single wing stroke is enough for great distance. High aspect wings.
