And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
If that porch was in Massachusetts the lack of a porch railing would be one. As built, my porch had a railing all around, but when I had the porch rebuilt due to rot (that's another stupid contractor story) we were told by the new contractor that railing are only required for the part of the porch over 24 inches above the ground. So we freed up the view, outside and through the windows for two thirds of the porch.
FWIW, if the floor is 8' or more above the lower level a "bottle rail" must be installed. A bottle rail is a rail that is mechanically fastened to the floor under the normal railing that prevents a rolling object from rolling off the deck and injuring someone below.
Ahhhh Brings back memories of my grandfathers 170 year old house in Georgia with a huge porch that wrapped around the house. No railing, huge old oak in the front yard. Its all gone now! Atlanta swallowed the little town of Fairburn and the two lane road running down by Pops house is 6 lane traffic jam and the property that the house was on is now a Dealership!!
Your porch? Man, CW, that's just spectacular! Does it get any better than that?!
ReplyDeleteAlas, not my porch, but I would have that if I could. Needs a dog, too.
DeletePoint out the building code violation.
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, nice porch. fuk the codes

No railing required if the deck is <24" from grade. That's IBC. Local rules however vary wildly, from more stringent to non existent.
DeleteNo code required when it was built and guessing still no code required in that rural setting.
DeleteBeautiful and flag pole most improtante.
ReplyDeleteBear Claw
I'd sit there and enjoy a cigar and a bourbon while enjoying the view and the peace and quiet.
ReplyDeleteSnow is nice to look at if you have nowhere to go in it, that rocking chair and a hot cup of coffee if all that's as far as I had to go would be fine.
ReplyDeleteIn another season, I recall a similar view from that porch. Seasons Come-Seasons Go...
ReplyDelete-----ya don't need the fan in this picture. As has been stated elsewhere---fukthacode.
