And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

The distance between Sydney and Perth is longer than the distance between Moscow and Paris
The last I read, Australia main inhabitants are along the coast lines with the interior having extremely sparse populations on large ranches. Back then (2006) about the land mass of the US with the population of Los Angeles California.
Great travel book written by Bill Bryson IN A SUNBURNT COUNTRY. Funny, with history and landscape well described.
That just shows how unexpectedly large Oz is and gives a sense of proportion to us. Another sort of the same thing is that Reno is further west than LA, and when you are in El Paso, you are closer to San Diego than to Lake Charles, Louisiana. Isn’t geography fun?
and crazy japanese guys ride loaded down bicycles from perth to sydney, during summer when its +35C and 200 plus miles between water holes/service stations.
Haven't been to Sydney, but was in Perth in the 80s when our sub pulled into Rockingham for liberty. The Aussies loved American sailors, and I was bought many a beer such that at the end of the night I was finding it hard to tie my shoes. Don't know if I'd want to visit there now. The country seems to be close to a full dictatorship.

ReplyDeleteNow measure with the lines straight.
ReplyDeleteI have as much interest in traveling from Paris to Moscow as I have in traveling from Perth to Sydney. That is, none.
ReplyDeleteSo you're saying that Napoleon couldn't conquer Perth if he started from Sydney?
ReplyDeleteNappy was my first thought too, but you put it in words more better than me.
DeleteBut the Aussies see less problem with snow.
ReplyDeleteWith dictators, it's a total wash.
The Moscow variant seems more moderate than the fruit loop dictators in the other 3. I know, matter of degree, but still.
DeleteIn Canada, from Vancouver to Halifax it is 7313km, plus snow and Dictator Prancing Socks.
DeleteNo matter what these distances are. It's still a long way to Tipperary.
ReplyDeleteRode Perth to Sydney and back again 25 years ago on an old CB750. Tent, sleeping bag and coffee pot. Good times.
ReplyDeleteFor north/south travel Cairns to Melbourne is about the same distance as Miami to Minneapolis.
ReplyDeletePerth was a great liberty port in 1980!
