65 pound snapping turtle - straight from a Paleolithic nightmare to your front yard (if you live in the South)

  1. We have big ones like that up here in the North, too in Western PA. I've seen some real monsters sunning themselves on the banks of ponds and rivers. Makes you a bit nervous to go swimming.............

  2. In High School I was snorkeling in the river when I bumped into one of those. His nose was on the glass of my mask. We both did a 180 and left without a how-do-you-do!

  3. I caught one about 20 lbs. With only a tree limb about the size of a 2x4. Well, I shouldn't say 'caught'. I lifted him out of the water and said, Hey guys, lookie here. In one chomp the beast cut clear through that limb. Ironically enough, that was on the Alligator River near Pamlico Sound.

  5. As mean as they look, they generally won't bother you if you don't bother them.

    My wife and I almost got bit once when we were trying to get one off the road before he got hit. He was not pleased.
