And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Propeller vortices on a F4U Corsair getting ready for take-off.
lots of wasted energy there what with the prop slip. could have used the prop off of a P47 called a paddle blade prop. electric control instead of leaky hydrauligs, less slip, same engine. gave much better climb performance. but, the Navy was stuck in it's ways... yeah, not really the same engine, had a two speed external supercharger and one internal and intercoolers and the P-47 had turbocharger and throttle body fuel injection and water/alcohol injection. I wonder if Republic ever tried to hang a tailhook under that 14,000 lb. monster but I don't see how they could have folded the wings. The USAAF did fly P-47s off a carrier deck into North Africa...
Cool!
ReplyDeleteMakes sense why the Brits call it an airscrew.
ReplyDeleteTechnically an F4U-5NL, a night fighter version of the Corsair. The radar housing on the wing gives it away.
