  1. The HU-16, we called it "The Goat" in the CG. I worked in the goat shop and was a "Flight Mechanic" on it.

    2. I was on the last one leaving the west coast, they still flew them out of CGAS Cape Cod.
We did monthly water temperature patrols on the west coast with the Goat, the southern leg (down to San Diego) was on Wednesday. The Marine Science Tech who scheduled the patrols did that leg on Wednesday because that was Ladies Night at the Oasis.
After they canceled the west coast water temp patrols they transferred the planes to the east coast. That was 1980 I think.

  2. Always wondered why the centerline of the propeller shaft was not parallel to the centerline of the line-of-flight! Anyone know the answer?

    1. goes back to the fuselage being part boat. helps get it on step on the water so as to reduce hydrodynamic drag on take-off; also, sets up the thrust line to avoid pitching down into the water on landing so the aircraft doesn't turn into a submarine. USAF made good use of the -16. they make hellacious nifty recreational vehicles if you can afford the fuel.
