And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Thomas Jefferson Encyclopedia at -Monticello dot org- agrees with you, Mr. Rob.
But I have freely used these sort of quotations myself in the past- all with good intention (I can't recall ever attributing a quote to anyone erroneously after I knew it was not verified)... The Monticello organization may conveniently NOT find certain papers which exhibit a pro 2A stance these days.
I was not around Mr. Jefferson in his prime, nor can I verify the anonymous quote above in any of my readings, but I will be teaching my children the principle of the quote.
Because we do have very specific and documented writings from the time stating that "one would be an absolute dumbass to not believe the people need the second amendment to defend themselves from their own government." I'm paraphrasing, but it is my own quote, so I'm ok with that.
Schemes to take control of a government are as old as government is, I think we are lucky that (so far) 'they' are using mostly nonviolent means.
ReplyDelete"The reason for the second amendment is for the people to defend themselves from their own government"....T. Jefferson
ReplyDeleteI couldn't find where Jefferson said that.

What about an upper limit on running for office?
ReplyDeleteSay about 70 or so...
74.
DeleteFor some people, ther is no principle they are not willing to sacrifice in order to gain control of the levers of power so they can get their way.
