And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

My grandma had one - it would get real exciting when she'd forget to remove the hair spray cans from the trash, and toss them in.
My job as a boy was to take the trash out to the burn barrel and burn it. One of the perqs of that job was the aerosol cans, which I would carefully stand up vertically for maximum effect.
I still have one, just used it yesterday. I am meticulous about what goes into it. I hate emptying it and having lots of unburned trash. Feed it slow and no plastic or metal.
Outlawed most places now ... big generator of "PIC's" ... product of incomplete combustion. Like dioxin. Just like most waste oil burners are illegal now. Too many heavy metals in the residue and stack gases.
But yes, my folks had one when I was growing up, as well as a compost pile. If you lived in the country, there really wasn't any trash or garbage service.
We had a huge field stone and mortar deal along with the neighbors. Burned everything. No plastic back then 1935 -1950 ... Surely caused all the worlds problems since.
When I bought my first house it had a concrete path from the back door out to the middle of the yard. Took me a while to figure out that it was the path to the burn barrel.
Apparently my aunt or uncle forgot to tell one of their kids about a black flag can in the trash and it scared the hell out of all of us when it blew up.

Just burned yesterday, mine has an assortment of holes about a third of an inch in diameter to enhance the burning process.
ReplyDeleteEmpty starting fluid cans make a nice bang too.
ReplyDeleteI use one for yard clippings in the winter months when it is legal to burn
ReplyDeleteI was born in 61, we had a burn barrel in the backyard in Fresno until we moved in 68. I'm sure they were banned shortly thereafter.
ReplyDeleteThose of you who had them are responsible for all the global warming (or global cooling) that we're going through.
ReplyDeleteI had one and take responsibility for doing my part.
