I had an uncle that did this kind of thing during WWII.

He said two things:

First, there's nothing on the bottom of San Francisco Bay but mud.

Second, he hated the job, because your life was dependent on your support team up top.  If they screwed up, you died.

  1. aye. any time your safety and well being depends on the technology you have to use, your life depends on the equipment maintainers not screwing things up. sometimes shit happens. sometimes it has human causes.
back in the 1970's a 747 fell out of the sky into a mobile home park(no tornado involved). many people died near chicago that day. the cause? maintainers used a forklift to install the engine and engine pylon as a unitary assembly on the wing contrary to published manufacturers instructions. because that's the way they "always did it".
makes you think twice before ignoring maintenance instructions.
