A crafty fox in the neighborhood.

Took my evening constitutional with the wife and two younger kids, down to the end of the road and back.

On the way, the boy suddenly pointed out into the neighbors field and there was a red fox trotting away.

We all stopped and watched him until he put enough distance between us and him that he felt comfortable, at which point he sat down and watched us right back.

I think there are at least two of them living in an old culvert, as there are signs of a lot of travel in and out, and fox sized trails going to the road and out into the field.

Pretty cool to have them so close to the house, but the cats better watch out.

    1. The dog, a big Rhodesian Ridgeback, is out all night, and nothing gets the chickens when he is on watch. The cats, however, silently pad their way everywhere, and the fox might ambush them before the dog knows. Lost a cat last year, and I think it was the fox that got it.

    2. Cats are more easily replaced than dogs. And the Ridgeback (absent rabies) would make very short work of a fox.

    3. All good points. The dog has had his vaccination, so he's safe.

    1. I worked with a guy who had a surprise encounter with a bat one night, and although he wasn't bitten, they made him get the shots anyway, to be safe. No fun at all.
