And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? Those bad ass Romans....
Arch of Septimius Severus - Roman ruins in the Mediterranean, Leptis Magna, Libya.
We went to Ephesus a couple of years ago. Absolutely fascinating. Our guide said something at the start of the tour that resonated with me. "Just because it's ancient doesn't mean it's primitive." Running water, the ability to heat and cool homes. Unlike Pompeii, a large portion of the city was buried in a mudslide, so comparatively less damage. Really worth visiting if given the opportunity.
Bad ass beyond all description as it applies to the modern world. For some reason the "Roman" was bred completely out of the Italians.
