Abalone shell, so common, yet at the same time so extraordinary.

  1. I have heard that these beautiful shells have no monetary value when they are less than 12-inches across, but become VERY costly when larger.

    1. There are different subspecies of abalone. Usually you find them at different depths - blacks in shallower water, sometimes reds. Greens and pinks in deeper water and whites in very deep and clean water. The color designation comes from the exterior color of the shell. They were abundant off the Southern California coast when I was young. Now due to rampant pollution, they can't be found in the area.
