And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

His paintings of Sierra Nevada and Sierra Nevada in California are breathtakingly magnificent. I saw the original of the latter at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts many years ago - it was 7’ x 12’ and I felt like I could have walked right into the scene. He was one of the painters sent to the western US to paint landscapes to bring back to show Congress what lands to make into National Parks.
I have one of his pictures, not actual but my husband too the poster I had and had it put to canvas, framed for Christmas gift, It's the one of Morning in Yosemite.

ReplyDeleteIf you ever get a chance to get a close up look at an original Bierstadt, look to see if you can detect any brush strokes. It is amazing.
