Western Landscape, 1871, Albert Bierstadt

  1. If the sun is at his back, maybe he is looking at a mountain to the east, with the last rays and beams shining on the top of it. (sun sets to the west California and rises in Japan).

  2. His paintings of Sierra Nevada and Sierra Nevada in California are breathtakingly magnificent. I saw the original of the latter at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts many years ago - it was 7’ x 12’ and I felt like I could have walked right into the scene. He was one of the painters sent to the western US to paint landscapes to bring back to show Congress what lands to make into National Parks.
