  3. When my father was stationed at Hancock Field just outside of Syracuse, NY, we lived in Brewerton... about 30 minutes north of the city. Interstate 81 was a few hundred yards from out front porch. The I-81 bridge that went over a section of the Erie Canal was also nearby. In the summer (not the winter), the neighborhood kids would walk onto the bridge and jump off into the canal water. I did it a few time, but it really scared me.

  4. How does one suppress the gasp reflex after plunging into icy water?

    1. Anon@740: I could be wrong but I bet the mammalian diving reflex slams the epiglottis shut. Swallow a time or two and it will relax so you can breathe again. Also, like wearing a PFD, not having your lungs full of water makes it easier for the recovery team to find your body.

Asking for a friend that is getting senile in front of the world and has recently lost the ability to identify former allies he wants to invade for no reason.

  8. Jumped into a lake in MN one April. We were all making weird noises because in waste deep water our bodies refused to let us inhale.

  9. If it's cold enough for the ice to be strong enough to stand on, it's too cold for me to be out on it watching
