Unreal!! Huge Tornado and 1000ft lava fountains at Hawaii's Kilauea and specifically the Halema'uma'u caldera.

  1. That’s awesome! Quite serendipitously I was there for eruption #25 this past June. Was about a 1300’ single vent spew. Took lots of photos and video from lots of angles.Very cool but no tornado.

  2. You would think what with all the volcanic heat and moist tropical weather, bound to happen, though its easy to imagine it is unusual.

  3. And people think that Humans can really affect the future of the Earth. We're like a pimple on her butt. 1200 ft geyser of molten rock? WTF is the psi on that thing?

  4. Rough calculations tell me that lava as a molten igneous rock (granite?) in a column 1200 ft tall would be around 16-17,000 psi. Try to put your finger over that hose. Maybe I'm all wrong. I went to school in the 70's.

    1. Unless you figured the viscosity of the magma and the vent diameter into the equation your calculation is probably a tad light.
