  2. Three times I've seen the green flash. Once from land, twice at sea. To be sure, a blessing.
    It is so incredible that there is no thinking you might have seen it. In that case, no, you didn't.

According to my high-school physics teacher, it is a refractive effect of the sun going below the horizon, splitting the sunlight a la rainbow, and momentarily showing some of the green spectrum. It must require special atmospheric conditions or something, because I have looked for it on multiple occasions, and only managed to scorch my retinas. YMMV.
