  3. I think at that age both my wife and I were testing tubes to help dad out (thousands of miles apart). She ended up working on the Space Shuttles. I ended up designing stuff from guided bombs to satellites with 20 years worth of it on commercial aircraft.

  4. I remember pulling all the tubes out and going down to Safeway to test them on the machine, then pulling out a new one to replace what was bad. Buy the new one, take it home & put them all back so you could watch your 3 channels that the rabbit ears antenna picked up.

    1. Yep. Mom hollered at me too for sitting that close to the TV!

  6. When I was in high school in Hollywood FL I cobbled together a functional TV from the parts of five I found in the trash. I think I had to remap the wiring to the pins of the CRT, and the deflection yoke was for a different tube so the picture ended up half the size in the middle of the screen -- but it worked. I told my Dad not to get close to the thick wire that hooked up to the side of the CRT...

    1. High voltage power supply to the tube and a hot flyback transformer. Dangerous stuff to play with as a teen.

  9. we got one with turntable&AM-FM because the model shown here didn't meet my parents minimum weight for electronics-made-to-resemble-Louis XIV-faux-crapola-furniture requirement.

  10. Geez. Friend and I traveled the streets at night collecting tubes out of TV and radio sets people put out for trash night. When we gathered a few hundred dropped them at a TV repair shop that had a test stand, week or so he paid us pretty goo money, quarter and fifty cents apiece. Not too shabby for couple Boy Scouts, got us nice gear, knives etc.
See prices now for good used, Woo! Man they came in so many types, superb, crafted technology.
