And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Imagine you are an ancient Hawaiian, and you see this coming over the horizon.
Not the best Fata Morgana "optical delusion" I've ever seen, but it's in the top few. Hard to imagine what someone a few hundred years ago would think.
Ended up in the cook pot too. Read one of his early ship's log, left in our family, we donated it to a museum. Incredible history, they guy got his ship around to many islands, lot of recounts about woman, no small number of crew jumped ship cause they found wives.
Royal Navy ca. 1770.......rum, sodomy and the lash, shipwreck and grapeshot. Nowadays their ships are dry and the golden rivet humping is almost mandatory since most of the time the ships are wrecks at the pier. Soon they will be able to hoist the black flag of Barbary, the replacement of jolly jack tars with bashi baza boys goes apace.
Check out how many modern seacharts are actually still showing Cook's navigational data....
Normally I wouldn't go on a cruise if you offered me one for free. I'd make an exception for a windjammer like the Royal Clipper. Winter cruise through the Caribbean with only 200 folks sounds OK.

ReplyDeleteAgreed, but the combination of "WTF" and "Oh shit" is likely.

brings to mind the closing scenes of Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto". It was totally unexpected yet likely a probable occurence.
