  1. I've never seen the attraction for these things. I inherited three of them. Tried wearing them. Tried putting them in our cars. Never used them yet. Some acquaintances have them, but I've yet to see them be employed for any task. Sell me one. Give me a sales pitch. [And, not something so seldom, rare, and specific, (like for example, about backpacking, etc.)].

    1. Standard issue for US Army troops on deployment. Use to twist C wires together, cut 550 cords, etc. I found them to be useful in certain circumstances.

    2. I was a Demolitions Specialist for 4 years in an engineer unit in Europe in the 70's. The Engineers Demolition tool box had side cutters and demo knives (sparkless) for doing the tasks you mentioned and were not standard issued to everybody, not everybody was a specialist and would not use them.

People have gifted multitools to me twice and I wanted to like them but found they are mostly useless all things considered. They do a lot of stuff and all of it poorly. If you see one on someone's belt you should be suspicious of their work quality. I'm a hands on person and fix stuff all the time and I cannot think of one instance where a multitool would have come in handy.

Multitools seem to be mostly another vanity booster, bragged about by hollow headed narcissist's.

  2. In this house we worship Leatherman!
Seriously when I was working I carried and used one every day. Once my boss borrowed my Leatherman, as I watched he tried to use it to pry a box open... with the blade. Snapped it off. I smiled at him and said "I'll expense a new one, right?".
He agreed. I bought the top of the line model next, still have it.

  3. People use the wrong reference.
Multi tools are not designed to replace a toolbox full of tools.
They are designed to replace fingers.
When there is nothing else available, they are invaluable.

    1. Fake tools used by fake people messing things up.
      $74 / 14 tools = $5 per tool.
      Yeah, cheap junk.

  4. I use my Leatherman a lot when I do not have a tool and need to do something with a sound system at church (screw drivers), or a quick repair on a chicken fence (wire cutters and pliers) , or a quick repairs while camping (pliers, knife, can / bottle opener, and wire cutters), or some quick impromptu repair of thermocouples in the field (scre drivers, wire cutters and pliers). Again, as others said, great thing to have when there are no other tools available.

  5. I’ve worn out 2 of these models over the last 15 years or so, use it daily. I’m an aircraft mechanic in Alaska and use this constantly; like when I’m contorted under an instrument panel trying to do something and realize I didn’t grab a tool I need. I’ve fixed a LOT of little issues on airplanes that would have caused cancelled or late flights with just this on my belt. I didn’t have to drive the 3 miles each way from the ramp to the hangar where my tool box lives. They’re a one handed operation (just flick them to pop the pliers out) and go with me everywhere. I figure if I wreck, I’m going to lose the use of one hand at least.

  6. Handy to have available, but overused by many owners. Have a friend who swears by his multi-colored, but hand him a real tool and watch out! Bad things coming! The lriginal.Leatherman has utility. Most others are kinda useless in comparison.
