And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
The new ones are crap. Irwin took the perfection that Petersen Mfg designed and made 'em worse. Get thee to a garage sale! Them ol' Danes knew cold iron. Today, it's all owned by Stanley Black & Decker, and it's been lightweighted and cheaped out to a fare thee well. "Improved, new features, etc etc" - means: don't work like they used to.
The visegrips used to be made in Nebraska. Now that Newell Rubbermaid bought Irwin that plant was closed down and guess where they make them now? All of their other tool manufacturing plants will follow no doubt.
My Vice-Grips are all at least 20 years old. Even the Schrade - Irwin ST1 Tough Tool. I didn't know that the quality of the current products had cheapened that much.
When they were made in DeWitt Nebraska, they were the best. I have racks full of original Vice Grips and recently bought a replacement for one I had nicked with the plasma cutter. After seeing the piece of crap the new one is I welded up the jaw on the old one and it's still better than the new one.

ReplyDeleteI have a short 7" one in my truck for tasks that only it can do. Bought it in the early 70's, so pretty bulletproof.
