And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Saba Island and Saba Bank just south of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Passage. Used to do USCG Drug interdiction in that area, and it was always active! Great Fishing in the area. But the Island is pretty boring. If I remember correctly there was one boat landing and you had to have perfectly calm seas to approach it. Its good for mountain goats!
The highest spot in the entire kingdom of the Netherlands is on Saba - Mount Scenery. A trail with a whole bunch of steps goes to the summit where there are magnificent views. I was up there by myself one beautiful, cloudless Christmas Day many years ago, so I guess I was the highest person in the kingdom that day. Saba has some great diving, and the local dark rum based Saba Spice is really good. There is a hospital and medical school and the well equipped port has a hyperbaric chamber. As far as air travel, the runway is STOL only, and the take offs are lots of fun, kinda like taking off from an aircraft carrier without the aid of a catapult. Back when our Navy still had Tomcats, one intrepid pilot did a touch and go on that runway with his F-14. When we were there, the Twin Otters would often have to make a low pass prior to landing to scare the goats off the runway.
Visited with my wife and daughter about 7 years ago looking at property. There is a medical school which swells the population to twice its native size. Many of the properties being sold were by long term resident families trying to strike it rich with some homes 200 years old. And it showed. You are at the mercy of the boats delivering food weekly and there isn't much to do there. I told my wife Imwould work at the ex-pat hardware store for a sandwich a day. That landing is fun and I have a similar video.
And once you're there on beautiful Saba Island....what is there to do? Looks like it's just a wildlife habitat, so....no thanks.
ReplyDeleteSaba has just under 2,000 inhabitants and several hotels

That wasn’t bad. A little short but it’s flat. And paved. And the hills are only on one side.
