    1. Want a scary ride? Try a Westphalia camper bus with a remote oil temperature sensor in the dipstick. Holy crap! Talk about running hot, and it wasn't loaded, just me and some wetsuits for a scuba class weekend. Borrowed the BIL's '71 Bus for a class at Monastery Beach on Hiway#1, south of Monterey. Running down Skyline Blvd, I look at the temp and it's running 260-280*F, and I wasn't flogging it, and it wasn't hot out. No wonder the bus and her '68 Bug went through engines as often as they did.
I suggested he add the external oil cooler and filter setup which held 5 qts, but no, he had to keep everything factory. He didn't understand that oil in Europe was very expensive when those were designed, so they carried as little oil as possible, ISTR less than 3 quarts. Plus, the cooler inside the fan box blocked air flow to the #3 cylinder, which was always the one to drop a valve and lunch the engine.

    2. I had a 71 with a dip stick oil temp gauge in the dip stick, I could see why I had to rebuild so often too! I put a Reveco (?) external oil cooler on and things looked a lot better.
That was a long time ago...

  8. The last one looks peaceful and has me wrote all over it. I spent a couple of years customizing a couple of Porsches. That guy is should not be in all that sand. Buy a VW buggy. Close without all the radiators and turbo with intercoolers. Asking for trouble.
