Forest service accidentally starts a huge fire, then, learning nothing, they do it again. Keep matches away from these people.

"... the agency said on Friday.... Forest Service investigators determined the Calf Canyon Fire was caused by a 'burn pile' of branches that the agency thought was out but reignited.... That blaze on April 22 merged with the Hermits Peak Fire, which the USFS started with a controlled burn that went out of control on April 6, the agency previously reported.... Blazing a more than 40-mile-long... path up the Sangre de Cristo mountains, the fire has destroyed watersheds and forests used for centuries by Indo-Hispano farming villages and Native American communities."

Full, sad story here.

"Indo-Hispano?"  Let's force everyone into categories, shall we?   More woke idiocy.

    1. Well, we normals would get ourselves sued into poverty if we screwed up like this. Give a moron qualified immunity and this is far from the worst that can happen. Our government is full of morons.

  2. In actuality, the fire did not destroy the watershed nor did it permanently destroy the forest. What it did was release nitrogen into the soil and both watershed and forest will be improved when the vegetation grows back. Such hand wringing.

    1. Have you been paying attention to the million acre plus fires that have become a regular occurrence in California over the last several years? These catastrophic wildfires sterilize the soil and the land will take at least a generation, if not two, to become a healthy forest again.

Or if you're of the 'Let It Burn' philosophy never mind. You're a lost cause.

    2. What Elmo sed. The only good thing about a forest fire is…there can’t be one there again for a looong time, ‘cause everything’s dead. I live within spitting distance of both the King and the Caldor Fires. If don’t log them before they burn, we’ll log them after. Either way, they get logged. Idiots in Sacramento.

  3. I'm about 40 miles west of the inferno. Some days the smoke looks just like an atom bomb explosion on the horizon. Springtime here is always windy and it's been extremely dry lately. It was a "controlled burn" instigated by the FFS that took out half of Los Alamos housing back in 2000. I drove to Las Vegas, NM a week ago and everywhere are signs reading, "Thank you FFS. We support you." It's the Federal Forest Service that started the fire. Now they're trying to put it out and everybody loves them. Short attention span? Vaxxed? The stupid... it burns.

  4. Colorado has many burning coal mines that occasionally surface. One near Glenwood Springs broke out. A nearby construction crew offered to use their bulldozers to bury the fire. The forest service representative said, "No, let the professionals handled it". Two days later the fire spread across I-70 and destroyed the West end of Glenwood Springs.

  6. (Old Tech) Has anyone noticed what color they wear when doing this? Orange. All of them Government Agents in Orange.
To quote an old saying from the USAF in Vietnam, "Only you can prevent a forest."

  7. Northern New Mexico is full of Forest Service dim wits that have neither learned their lessons and are too frigging arrogant to change. Remember Cerro Grande, May 2000 anyone?!

    1. It's not just in New Mexico. The entire agency has been chickified and wussified.
Here's the educational experience of my local forest supervisor (Tahoe National Forest) -

"Eli earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1995, a master’s degree in environmental policy and landscape architecture in 2001 and a master’s degree in city and regional planning in 2001, both from the University of California at Berkeley."

See anything there related to forestry, silviculture or the fire sciences?
      Neither do I.

  9. the Indo-Hispano, the compound name recognizing centuries of cultural interchange and racial-mixing. The name was created in response to a question posed when some hispanics were complaining that they should be the rightful owners of land that hand been granted to them by the Spanish government. The questioner asked "didn't Spain steal the land from the Indians". The idea here is that since some Hispanics and some Indians intermarried that makes them Indo-Hispano and therefore all is forgiven.
