  3. The head differential for the thermo-siphon is not large enough. Also boundary surface effect drag might be a problem if the water in the coil were to boil. And if that were to happen can you say 2nd degree burn?

  4. This is what is called: research and development. Using the best knowledge available - take a stab at the desired solution. Note successes and failures, make corrections, and try again.

    That said - I’da made the intake/outlet as low and high, respectively, as possible. I’d also wonder if a larger diameter pipe would work better - but perhaps they were using the best that was on-hand at the time.
