Watch this - Tesla's self driving car.

The older daughter says they have these in Silicon Valley, but everyone hates them because they drive the speed limit and hold up traffic.

  1. I do the speed limit because I require a "benchmark" set by traffic engineers to pace myself and be in control. So can anyone tell me what's the acceptable speed in MPH of "The traffic"? And if 98% of the drivers consider it their "right" to travel at 15 MPH over the posted limit isn't it MY RIGHT to travel 15 MPH under the designated limit set by the non professional self appointed traffic experts? I mean according to the Millennial code of irrational justice we all have rights and deserve those rights.

    1. Sure, you have every bit as much to be an asshole and a danger to yourself and everyone around by driving 30 mph slower than everyone else. Besides, the "professional" traffic have little to do with speed limits on most stretches of road. It's far more political than anything else.

  2. That car comes to a complete stop at the stop signs.... When there are enough of them around and they can communicate (less mistakes when the cars KNOW what the other cars are doing) they WILL make less mistakes than humans.
Less mistakes than a human is the key to having this all work...

  3. How do they handle the last 3 or 4 tag-along followers who run the red light in heavy traffic? My daily commute involves several intersections where the light turns green and you still have to wait for the stopped cars to clear before you can go.

  4. I write software for a living and work in transportation. No F@#$ing way. Bugs, won't be able to account for all scenarios. Cost, it will drive up costs for everyone. Sensors, computers should be redundant for failure. It will cost more than most people can afford, yet the government will mandate it. If you drive your old jalopy, they will run up the insurance costs. They want you out of your private owned vehicle.

    1. It's worse than that. They want to control who can travel, when, and where. With self driving cars, they will be able to do just that in the very near future. Yet most people think this is the coolest thing.

  6. Google can't even keep my GoogleID straight on this site, which is why I sign my posts, but I'm supposed to trust some pencil-necked geeks with my life and safety at 65-70MPH.

    Sh'yeah, right.
    As if.

How do they handle giant blow-up Mylar beach balls dropped by the cars in front of them?
And can their sensors spot metal caltrops?

    Asking for a friend...
