I remember something similar in a vertical orientation that was used on cattle who pushed their heads between the strands of a barbed wire fence.
It was hinged in the middle so when the cow pushed the device would fold back slightly, shoving a couple of strategically placed barbs into the animal. Most cows soon learned not to push through the fences.
Wouldn't work on a cat.
