I know I just bought a new truck...

But this looks like it could be a sharp rig.  However, this little commercial doesn't talk about gearing, differentials, or the four wheel drive, although we're told it has a snorkel!

And I gotta say, I laugh at the roads Chevy is using to demonstrate how tough and off road worthy their new specialty truck is.   Those are literally child's play to anyone who has faced the rocky tracks that stretch across the Nevada deserts and Basin and Range country I'm familiar with.   Good lord, even my old full size 4x4 Dodge could easily traverse anything I'm seeing on that video.

Come on Chevy, let's see some really big, rough, wet and rocky roads that are both steep and which twist and turn on the way up.  Tracks even a IH Scout might hesitate to approach 25 miles in on a rocky desert trail.

Full disclosure: I honed my off road skills in various Dodges following a tricked out Scout my buddy used, and which he wasn't afraid to risk on some vein popping roads.

Anyway, a good looking truck that might do well, but might also be silly expensive.  We'll see.

  1. Those are kinda neat looking but stupid spendy even for the less tricked out 4x4. No thanks. I'll buy an old beater full-sized rig before dropping dumb money on that.

    1. It seems to me that with the basics of good tires, four wheel drive and skill and careful driving, you can go over some incredibly bad roads safely. Not much need for a snorkel (maybe it attracts the babes, dunno).

    2. Thing is, those aren't marketed to you or me....they are marketed to the Millenial suburbanite who thinks offroading is parking in the grass...

    3. C W, that's just it isn't it? Decent gear, good sense and a few skills go farther than a $60K toy in the hands of a ding-dong. Hell, I took my old AWD Astro into some interesting places.

And speaking of Scouts. My grand daddy had a 1965 Scout and we drove that thing through a 24" deep blizzard all day. Got it back to the shop cuz Pop said it wasn't pulling right... Sure enough. It broke the end off one of the axle shafts at the wheel.

Went over to the IH dealer and to this day I remember the parts guy saying, "oh yea, you'll get the shaft..."

      :-D

    4. The snorkel is used (properly) to reduce dust into the intake. It does little to protect the engine during water crossings. If the water is higher than the tops of the tires, it will be beating your fan blades off and will get into the electrical system unless you're running a diesel. Diesel is a different game.

  2. I'm happy with my 2013 Toyota Scion because unlike almost all Americans I accept I'm just a little fleck of fly feces floating on the great sea of humanity and unlike most Americans I don't need a big expensive piece of shit to inflate my worthless ego while I go to the supermarket, doctors or dentists office. If it offends anyone, that's tough shit!

    1. And how was that self serving statement germane to the subject?

  3. My F-250 was in 4wheel drive 8 hours a day for months on one job and months on the next.
Up around Carson Pass/ Kirkwood it gets interesting.

  4. I didn't see anything my '04 Ranger couldn't handle. It also has the one option that make it superior - it is paid off.
