The Senate Judiciary Committee is typically expected to "favorably report" nominees to the full Senate and that requires a majority of the Republican-controlled panel to give a thumbs-up.
But that's mere tradition, not a law or even a hard-and-fast rule!
The majority leader, here Mitch McConnell, has the power to put any nominee's vote on the floor of the Senate at any time, provided he gives the other 99 lawmakers appropriate notice and at least 30 hours of debate time.
And Mitch McConnell is one angry majority leader as a result of the Progressives vile treatment of Judge Kavanaugh.
So, have it already! Give the required notice and 30 hours of debate time, and vote!
Yep, he's pissed!
One of the reasons this nominee is being so savagely attacked is that
ReplyDeletehe would make for a solid 5-4 constructionist majority. Another reason
is that the Democrats are in a panic over the midterm elections. There
are 5 or 6 Democrat Senators in red states that are extremely vulnerable.
The Democrats have to obstruct Kavanaugh's confirmation. If these Senators
vote no, it becomes an instant campaign ussue in these conservative states.
These Democrat Senators will be under a lot of pressure if they want to
win reelection. Even if Flake, Collins and Murkowski go weak in the knees,
all it would take is for two Democrat Senators to put their seats ahead
of party unity.
I posted the video today but didn't know the 30 hour rule. I checked and it looks like even if voted down, it can be brought back up. I don't see how at this juncture that there are enough votes to win, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteWord is out that Grassley has scheduled a Friday vote for the subcommittee, and it's starting to look less likely that Ms Looney Tunes will show up Thursday. We'll see what the 3 Rino Fence Sitting Club members decide then.....Also it looks like Avenetti's gambit regarding the supposed Yale gang rape club has been revealed as a 4chan prank. Awww, poor fella.

DeleteThe last I read there were 10 undecided. Do you have a link? Thanks.

DeleteBut I was thinking of Collins, Corker, and Flake. The latter two have nothing to lose as they are not running for re-election, and they both a happily sporting orange hard-ons, if you know what I mean. Collins is from a mostly blue state and is under tremendous pressure, in addition to having a tendency to take unpopular stands just to show how independent minded she is. So: Three Fools. I think the rest will fall into line because their respective bases are watching them like a hawk and flooding their offices with reminders. There are quite a few Democratic Senators that are in red-state re-election runs this year. It's fun watching them squirm.
:) Thanks and maybe McConnell has an ace up his sleeve:
