And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Well, snow over Donner Summit. Looks like I got the aspen trip in at the last possible minute.
Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt --- more than once. Deer or elk hunting in high country is one of those occasions when you need to keep one eye on the game and the other on the sky.
Had an uncle who was a big elk hunter up in Idaho. One season, he was in deep, long dirt road over mountains, ride down into a hole, camped at a meadow with horses. During the night it started snowing, and in the morning there was six inches on the ground. Immediate pack up and out, load the horses in the trailer and high tail it miles out before anymore fell. He considered it a close call.
On the ride up and out, he recalled looking back at the meadow they'd set up camp in, and seeing a lone, postage stamp sized square bare spot in the meadow where the tent had been set up before the snowfall. Gave him the willies, it did.
That escalated quickly 😁
ReplyDeleteThis time of year, anything can happen.
DeleteI'm just glad I'm not fifteen miles in at some high country lake on a backpack trip.

DeleteHelped my father pack out his hunters in more than one blizzard. Equines to the rescue.
