Just for kicks, I found my old fly box. Some really chewed up examples in there, but hey, those are the ones that work!

  1. I have no idea why it is, but the chewed up flies and lures seem to work the best. There must be some sort of karmic attraction to that particular hook and bit of fluff.

  2. My best results were with Royal Coachmans in the high altitude lakes of the Eastern Sierra, just before sundown. Some luck with salmon eggs and mealworms when fishing streams. (Grasshoppers are a secret weapon.) Panfish in SoCal lakes with mealworms is almost too easy but I'd rather eat trouts or catfish. My buddy has caught lots of Bass and even catfish, trolling with large Rapalas.
I have never caught anything with a Mepps or a Super Duper. Not sure why, as these are old standbys.
