USS Abe Lincoln pulling a hard turn

It appears the airplanes have already slid off the deck

  1. Ahhh, sea trials. That's when all the fun happens. This looks like builders sea trials, when the shipbuilding company takes the ship out and wrings out all the wrinkles before turning the ship over to the Navy. Then, when the Navy gets possession, they take her out for acceptance trials.

I was part of the Pre-Commissioning crew on the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) and got to experience all the fun stuff that a carrier can do when you don't have to worry about breaking airplanes and such. High speed runs, sudden reverse, hard turns, etc. You can't do those maneuvers with a deck and hangar loaded with aircraft. You'd lose half of them over the side before the day was done. Sea trials are normally conducted in an area off the Virginia coast known as "VAcapes". Known for it's nasty and unpredictable weather. Throw in all the hard maneuvering along with 25 foot swells and 60 knot winds and you have all the makings of a good amusement park ride.

  3. Same boat '90 -'94. Went through an overhaul with her in Brmemerton, WA. Rode TAD on Nimitz and Abe Lincoln while the Chucky V was in dry dock.

Yep, high speed turns and emergency reverse are fun when the airwing isn't embarked.
